How to Pick the Right Tool

There are 100+ tools on this board. Most new members download thirty of them in the first week, load fifteen onto one chart, and end up with a screen so busy they can't take a trade. Then they blame the indicators.

This is a short guide to picking two or three things that actually fit how you trade. Full list of everything is in the Master Index thread.

Step 1 — Ask what's actually going wrong

Don't start from "what's the best indicator." Start from where you're losing money. Almost every problem falls into one of five buckets:
  • "I don't know where to trade." → You need levels and structure, not signals.
  • "I'm at the right level but I don't know when to pull the trigger." → You need order flow.
  • "I'm right on direction but I get shaken out." → You need execution and trade management, not a new indicator.
  • "I make money then give it all back." → You need risk enforcement. Nothing else will fix this.
  • "I don't know what I'm doing wrong." → You need a journal. Seriously — before anything else.
Pick the one that stings. That's your section in the index. Ignore the other four for now.

Step 2 — Build the chart in this order

A working setup is layered. Each layer answers a different question, and you add the next one only when the current one is solid.

Layer 1 — Where (context)
Levels, profiles, session structure. This is your map. One profile tool plus one levels tool is plenty.
Free starting point: The VWAP, OGT Key Levels, TCSessionRegions

Layer 2 — When (confirmation)
Order flow or a trend filter. Pick one. If you're running a footprint and three oscillators, you've already lost.
Free starting point: FlowPrint or Delta Indicators

Layer 3 — How (execution)
Getting in and out cleanly, with stops and targets that don't require clicking around.
Free starting point: Mouse Trader, Order Line Decorator

Layer 4 — Protection (risk)
Daily loss limits, max position, account rules. Especially if you're on an evaluation.
Start with: Risk Monitor or Risk Master

Layer 5 — Review (journal)
TradeDashboard or Excel Trading Journal

Step 3 — Match your style

Order flow scalper — footprint + DOM + fast execution
XenFootprint or OrderFlowsTrader · SuperDOM Series · OrderFlow Speed · PredatorXOrderEntry

Profile / auction trader — value areas, IB, developing structure
Volume Profile [Advanced] · TDU Market Profile · TDU Initial Balance · 👑 Auction Δxis

Price action / structure trader — swings, BOS, zones
TDU Market Structure · SupplyDemandZones · Protected Highs & Lows · Price Action Indicators

Swing / trend trader — direction and pullbacks
Smart Channels · TDU Wicked Wave · Ninza Divergence Engine · TDU Auto Trendline

Automation / algo — read the section warning below first
TDU AlgoStudio Pro (build your own) · Ors Fusion · TDU Bar Replay to test before going live

Prop firm / evaluation — passing is a risk problem, not an entry problem
Risk Monitor · TC Account Info · CopierLite if you run multiple accounts

Step 4 — Check compatibility before you download

Half the "it doesn't work" posts are one of these:
  • Tick Replay. Most order flow and profile tools need Tick Replay enabled on the data series, plus enough downloaded tick history. Some don't — OGT Key Levels works either way.
  • OrderFlow+ licence. PowerFlow Pack needs NinjaTrader's own OrderFlow+ package. It won't run on a plain licence.
  • Bar type limits. Some volume tools break on Range and Renko charts — 👑 Ninza Imbalance Profile Lidar states this outright. Check before blaming the install.
  • Install path. Some are NinjaScript imports (Tools → Import → NinjaScript Add-On), others are DLLs dropped into Documents\NinjaTrader 8\bin\Custom. Read the first post.
  • Platform version. Built and tested against NinjaTrader 8.0.28.

The five mistakes that cost people the most

1. Stacking tools that say the same thing. Three momentum indicators aren't three confirmations — they're one signal drawn three times. You'll feel confident and be wrong at the same time.

2. Adding a tool to fix a discipline problem. No footprint will stop you revenge trading. That's a risk tool or a journal.

3. Running an algo live before testing it. Use Bar Replay or sim first, always. An algo you don't understand is a stranger with your account password.

4. Switching tools after two losing days. Two days is noise. Give a setup 20+ trades and a journal before you judge it.

5. Downloading the all-in-one packs on day one. The 👑 TDU and 👑 ninZa packs are great — but they're a library, not a setup. Pull two things out and close the rest.

f you're brand new — the free path

You don't need VIP to have a complete working chart. This costs nothing:
  1. The VWAP + OGT Key Levels — your map
  2. FlowPrint — your confirmation
  3. Mouse Trader — your execution
  4. Excel Trading Journal — your feedback loop
Run that for a month. You'll know exactly what's missing, and then you'll actually know what to go download.

Still not sure?

Reply here with what you trade, what timeframe, and what specifically goes wrong — not "what's the best indicator." You'll get a much better answer. Or post in Ask Question.

Full tool list: see the Master Index thread. 👑 tools need VIP.

Thanks @Mark, this post is really well done; it perfectly complements the NT8 Master Index post.
You should make both of them more prominent on the site—I’m not sure how, but it needs to be done; they are real entry points...
